Nissan is a Japanese car manufacturer that has two cult engines associated with it. One is the legendary RB26DETT motor from the R32-R34 Skyline models. The other is the SR20DET from the S13-S15 Silvia models. The SR20DET is a massively popular motor due to its so called ‘bang for buck’ construction. SR20DET motors are well known for their successful OEM turbocharged package but have been known to reach into the hundreds of HP with simple bolt on upgrades. Lets have a closer look at what SR20DET means:

• SR - Engine Code
• 20 - 2.0 Liters (actually only 1998cc)
• D - Dual Overhead Cam
• E - Electronic Fuel Injection
• T – Turbocharged

Originally born out of the fact that the SR20DET’s older brother (CA18DET) was becoming too expensive to produce and no longer jumped through Japan’s emission standards hoop, the SR20DET began life in October 1989.

In 89’ it lived between the strut towers of Nissan’s Bluebird 2000SSS Attesa but soon found it being installed into a few different makes of car. Between 1990 and 1994 it was used in the GTI-R, a pulsar bred for rally with 4WD drive train.  Between 1991 and 2002 the S-platform was used to create a famous FR (Front engine - Rear wheel drive) style car in the form of a Silvia. SR20DET was even used in models such as Avenir, R’nessa and Liberty; all production Nissan’s, but often not as popular as the famed S-platform and the GTI-R.
